Covid 19 related lockdown and restrictions have seriously affected teaching learning process in all levels of education including teacher training institutions in India those running approved courses of Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI). A few such training institutions those switched over to online classes for their teacher trainees have shown the satisfaction and indicated that virtual learning is one of the best methods not only during shut down conditions but also can be effective in ordinary days even after passing of pandemic period.

National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has urged for use of technology in training and education as well as introducing blended or hybrid learning in all educational institutions.

Hence with the broadening of scope for hybrid classes or blended learning as per NEP 2020, some of the forward-looking training institutions of RCI have come together to form and be part of a national consortium for accelerating hybrid learning of pre-service teachers in special and inclusive education. They have succeeded in integrating online classes to their curriculum successfully.

The objectives of National Consortium of Training Institutions in India (NCTI India) are:

1. Provide continuous academic support to training institutions in India
2. Provide opportunities to the training centers to expose their students to quality faculty through online mode
3. Provide opportunities to the internal faculty to contribute to the national pool of online faculty panel
4. Reduce the cost of training as well as improve the quality of curricular transaction by the training institutions
5. Provide opportunities for exchange of faculty for online workshops and online CRE programs/ webinars

The training institutions vis-à-vis the teacher trainees shall be benefitted in many ways:

Best Learning

As NCTI India delivers virtual lectures/presentations/panel discussions/demonstrations as per RCI syllabus through a pool of nationally recognized experts, hence the best input shall reach at the teacher trainees for each topics of the course throughout the two year or four semester training programs.

Flexible Learning

As the topics are covered virtually, it gives complete flexibility to the teacher trainees to attend the sessions from anywhere. It adopts to a flexible time so that it is scheduled as per the convenient time of the teacher trainees. Even having the flexibility, the faculty of training institutions can control their students by monitoring whether their students are attending the sessions actively or not.

Internal Faculty Development

Besides having experts from national pool, NCTI India burrows experienced and outstanding faculty members from each training institutions for conducting online sessions. All faculty members are compulsorily trained on how to deliver contents in best possible ways through online sessions. Those faculty if not part of the pool of experts, they participate along with their students and develop necessary skills.

Value Added Services

Along with virtual lectures/ presentations/ panel discussions/ demonstrations as per RCI syllabus, the teacher trainees are benefitted through unit end online assessment, participations in regular online webinars and online workshops.

Reduced Financial Burden on Training Institutions

Since most of the topics are covered through NCTI India digital platform, the teacher training institutions reduces the services of the guest faculty members for theory courses. The core faculty members also get sufficient time to concentrate on individual teacher trainees through tutorials, assignments and practicum.

Rating by the Students

A pool of national experts covers the topics whereas the students rate each expert based on their quality of teaching. The high rated experts get more opportunities and hence the process improves the quality over the time.

In the first phase, NCTI India started Online Classes for all theory papers in Hindi medium for Diploma Courses in Special Education in the area of Intellectual Disability (ID) and Hearing Impairment (HI) for all semesters. In the second phase it would expand to other areas of disability as well as it will add separate sessions in English medium in order cover whole of India. In the last phase it would extend to other courses of RCI.

Any approved institution of RCI can seek membership by paying a token amount of Rs. 10,000. The membership shall be renewed on yearly basis. For the year 2020-21, membership fee shall be adjusted with subscription fee.

Subscription charge shall be dependent on number of end users (students).  Subscription charges are to be paid on yearly basis. However, for this academic session, it can be paid on semester basis as per the prescribed rate.

1. Online/virtual lectures/presentations/panel discussions/demonstrations as per RCI syllabus @ 8 sessions per week (2x4 days) @ 36 sessions per theory courses
2. Participation in weekly webinars
3. Unit end assessment and doubt clearing session (integrated as the last session of each unit)
4. Online Workshops
5. Complimentary sharing of digital platform once in a month for hosting any academic activities/webinar subject to availability of the platform on the requested date and time
